Updates to the Virtual Training Suite from Intute

We would like to advise you of updates to the Virtual Training Suite from Intute, which offers free tutorials on use of the Web for education and research. The tutorials focus on academic resources online and provide guidance on critically evaluating material found on the Web. Aimed at students, there are 62 tutorials, covering most degree subjects, and produced by subject specialists from universities across the UK. This year the content and design of about half of the tutorials have been completely overhauled.

Tutorials of relevance to medicine include:

* Internet for Medicine

* Internet for Nursing
* Internet for Midwifery
* Internet for Health and Social Care
* Internet for Microbiology

The changes to the tutorials reflect Internet developments (in particular the impact of Web 2.0 technologies in higher education), academic Web trends, and extensive user feedback.

The new design makes the tutorials shorter and easier to read online. Interactive features include quizzes, practical exercises, and a 'links basket' functionality which allows the user to keep a record of all websites mentioned in the tutorial. Each tutorial takes around one hour to complete, but students can work through the material at their own pace.

Middlespot.com - a new VISUAL search engine

Middlespot.com is a great new visual search engine. It’s a fluid search engine which may not get the best results just yet (it’s run by just two guys at present) but it presents the results in a nice scrollable way.

Middlespot.com allows you to:

  • Store pages on one screen and zoom in and out of each saved page

  • Collect search results together that are from multiple searches, over any amount of time

  • Create and save your own 'workpads' of selected sites (workpads are feature rich. You can rename them to better reflect what they contain, leave a comment describing the contents of the workpad, open the entire workpad in the middlespot.com interface, and add any URL you want)

  • If you do want to share your workpads publicly on a blog or website, it is possible to do that as well

  • There are also search options for images, news, Amazon and Twitter

To learn more about using the interface, try the tutorial.

Give it a go and let us know what you think!

Happy New Year and 'TRIP answers'

Happy New Year to all students and staff!

As we are all back into the swing of things we thought we'd let you know about a high quality, new, free database:

TRIP answers is a "repository of clinical questions and answers drawn from a wide number of sources around the world and builds on TRIP’s ten years experience of answering clinical questions. Ultimately, we want to create a resource where clinicians can easily find answers to their question and, who knows, create a clinical Q&A ‘space’ where users can share their own Q&As."

TRIP answers has a very useful tag cloud to help you search for the subject you are interested in. Why not try it out and let us know what you think of it?
